Linked data (a.k.a. linked open data or LOD) is a subset of Semantic Web technologies using just the basics and providing the means to create a Web scale database. A lot of data is published in this way now, in what is called the LOD cloud, including public sector data, mapping data, publishing data and life sciences. You can use any vocabularies and any identifiers for anything but it works best if people use common vocabularies and agreed identifiers for common things. Phil will introduce us to his work on developing vocabularies to describe common things, such as people, places and businesses, and making sure that those vocabularies are stable enough for use by governments.
